The Unexpected Friendships That Hold Us Together

Some of the most meaningful relationships in our lives come from the most unexpected places. They're not always the people we grew up with or the friends we made in school—sometimes they're the ones who show up in the ordinary moments and stay through the extraordinary ones.
I first met my hairdresser years ago, before I even met my husband. He moved into the farming area I grew up in, and I started going to his house to have my hair cut. What started as a simple appointment became something so much more. He was the calm voice of authority managing my anxiety whilst sorting out my hair on my wedding day. Since then, I've spent countless hours in his salon chair. Because he works alone, these appointments have become more than just hair care—they are sacred spaces for real conversation.
We've talked about everything: life, dreams, challenges, faith. The kind of deep conversations you don't expect to have while getting your hair done, but somehow over the years we've got to know each other and become more like friends.
Last year, when I was facing chemotherapy, I went to him to have my hair cut short before it started to fall out. I walked in trying to be brave, but the weight of what I was facing—the fear of the next treatment after how terrible the first one had made me feel—was overwhelming. In that moment, in his salon, I couldn't hold back the tears.
And he didn't just cut my hair that day. He prayed for me. Right there, in the middle of his workday, he stopped everything and prayed over me. It's a moment I'll never forget. At a time when I was feeling truly fearful and unsure about how I was going to cope, he seemed to understand and was able to reassure me.
Most recently, I returned to his chair to neaten up my hair as it's started to grow back. Sitting there again felt like coming full circle—a quiet celebration of resilience, of making it through, of new growth in more ways than one.
This journey has taught me that some of the most important people in our lives aren't always the ones we expect. They're the ones who show up consistently, who create space for vulnerability, and who remind us we're not alone—even in a hair salon on an ordinary Wednesday.
As I continue to build Tehillah Clothing and create beautiful pieces for life's special moments, I'm reminded that it's often the unexpected relationships—the ones that catch us by surprise—that end up holding us together through everything.
Who are the unexpected people in your life who've become irreplaceable? I'd love to hear your stories.
